Sophie Turner Career

Game of Thrones (2011–2019)

Sophie’s drama teacher encouraged her to audition for HBO’s adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. She was cast as Sansa Stark, the elder daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark, in what was her first professional screen role. Game of Thrones premiered in April 2011 and became one of the most-watched and most-awarded TV dramas ever.

Over eight seasons, Sansa changed from a naive girl who dreamed of marrying a prince into a sharp political player who became Queen in the North in the series finale. Her scenes opposite Lena Headey‘s Cersei Lannister were key to her early story. In 2019 Sophie received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the final season, and she shared several Screen Actors Guild Award nominations with the ensemble cast.

Her off-screen friendship with Maisie Williams, who played her sister Arya, also became well known among fans.

Sophie played Sansa Stark for eight seasons.

X-Men and Film Work (2013–2019)

While Game of Thrones was still running, Sophie began acting in films. She appeared in Another Me (2013) and the teen action comedy Barely Lethal (2015). In 2016 she was cast as the young Jean Grey in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, and she returned to lead Dark Phoenix (2019), which focused on Jean’s transformation into the powerful Phoenix. Dark Phoenix struggled at the box office, but it gave Sophie her first lead in a big studio film. She also appeared in Josie (2018), Time Freak (2018) and Heavy (2019).

Streaming and Television (2020–2024)

After Game of Thrones, Sophie led the Quibi survival drama Survive (2020). In 2022 she played Margaret Ratliff in HBO Max’s true-crime miniseries The Staircase, alongside Colin Firth and Toni Collette, and played the scheming Erica in Netflix’s teen revenge comedy Do Revenge. She also appeared in the thriller Every Last Secret (2022).

In 2024 she starred in the ITV drama Joan as Joan Hannington, a real-life jewel thief known as “the Godmother” in 1980s London. The role marked a clear move into adult, character-driven parts. She followed it with the thriller Trust (2025), playing Lauren Lane.

Steal, The Dreadful and Tomb Raider (2026)

Sophie began 2026 with Steal on Prime Video and the horror film The Dreadful. In September 2025 she was announced as Lara Croft in Amazon’s Tomb Raider series, one of the most talked-about castings of the year. She has said she trained for months for the physical demands of the role, and the production was briefly paused in March 2026 after she was injured on set.

About the Tomb Raider Series

The new Tomb Raider is a live-action series for Prime Video, based on the video game franchise first released in 1996.
