Ranbir Kapoor Early Life, Family and Education

Ranbir was born in Mumbai to Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, who were among the most popular screen couples of the 1970s. His great-grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor and grandfather Raj Kapoor built the family’s place in Hindi cinema, and his uncle Randhir Kapoor’s daughters, Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, are his cousins. He has an elder sister, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni.

He studied at Bombay Scottish School in Mahim and has spoken about being an average student who was more interested in football and films than in exams. After pre-university studies at H.R. College in Mumbai, he moved to New York, where he studied filmmaking at the School of Visual Arts and method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

Before acting, he learnt the craft from behind the camera. He assisted on his father’s directorial film Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999) and later worked as an assistant director to Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Black (2005).

Ranbir Kapoor Career

Debut and Early Hits (2007–2010)

Ranbir made his acting debut in Bhansali’s Saawariya (2007), opposite Sonam Kapoor, who was also debuting. The film did not do well at the box office, but his performance won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008) gave him his first commercial success.

In 2009 he had three releases that changed his career: Wake Up Sid, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year. Together they earned him the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. He followed this with Prakash Jha’s political drama Raajneeti (2010), in which he played Samar Pratap, and the romance Anjaana Anjaani (2010) with Priyanka Chopra.

Rockstar, Barfi! and Stardom (2011–2013)

Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar (2011), in which he played the musician Janardhan “Jordan” Jakhar, is often called his finest early performance. It won him both the Filmfare Award for Best Actor and the Critics Award. A year later he played a deaf and mute man in Anurag Basu’s Barfi! (2012), with Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz. The film was India’s official entry to the Oscars and won him another Filmfare Best Actor award.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), with Deepika Padukone, became one of the biggest hits of his career and remains a favourite with young audiences.

A Difficult Phase (2013–2017)

Several films after 2013, including Besharam, Roy and Bombay Velvet (with Anushka Sharma), did not work at the box office. Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha (2015) did modest business but gained a strong following later. Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), with Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai, was a success. In 2017 he co-produced and starred in Jagga Jasoos through Picture Shuru Productions, the company he set up with Anurag Basu.

Sanju and Brahmāstra (2018–2022)

Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju (2018), in which Ranbir played actor Sanjay Dutt, was one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of its year and won him his third Filmfare Best Actor award. After a four-year gap he returned with Shamshera (2022), which did not do well, and Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022). He played Shiva in Brahmāstra opposite Alia Bhatt, with Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy. It was one of the year’s biggest hits.

Animal and Ramayana (2023–present)

In 2023 he starred in Luv Ranjan’s romantic comedy Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar with Shraddha Kapoor and then in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal. Animal divided critics over its violence and gender politics, but it was a huge box-office success and won Ranbir his fourth Filmfare Best Actor award.

His next two projects are some of the biggest in Indian cinema. He plays Lord Rama in Nitesh Tiwari’s two-part Ramayana, with Part 1 releasing on 5 November 2026, and reunites with Bhansali for Love & War, due on 21 January 2027.

Ranbir Kapoor Personal Life

Ranbir married actress Alia Bhatt on 14 April 2022 in a small ceremony at their home, Vastu, in Mumbai’s Bandra. The two had worked together on Brahmāstra, which released a few months later. Their daughter, Raha, was born on 6 November 2022. The couple have kept her photos private for most of her life, though they introduced her to the media at a Christmas lunch in 2023.

His father, Rishi Kapoor, died in April 2020 after a two-year illness. Ranbir has spoken in interviews about how close he grew to his father in his final years and about the influence of his mother, Neetu Kapoor, who returned to acting in 2022.

Outside films, Ranbir is a keen football fan. He co-owns the Indian Super League club Mumbai City FC, which he bought into in 2014 with Bimal Parekh, and plays for the All Stars Football Club, a celebrity charity team. In 2024 he launched ARKS, a lifestyle and clothing brand.

Why Ranbir Kapoor Stands Out

Few actors of his generation have balanced commercial stardom with acclaimed performances the way Ranbir has. His best-known roles are very different from each other: a deaf and mute man in Barfi!, a self-destructive musician in Rockstar, a real-life star in Sanju and a violent son in Animal. He also carries the legacy of one of Indian cinema’s oldest families without leaning on it in his choice of roles. With Ramayana and Love & War releasing within three months of each other, the 2026–27 season may be the biggest of his career.
