Tina began acting very young, at around five years of age, with a role in Sister Nivedita. As a child she worked in several Bengali films, including Pita Maata Santan, Dus Number Bari and Sagarkanya.
Child Roles in Chokher Bali and Parineeta
Two of her early roles came in well-known films. She appeared in Rituparno Ghosh’s Bengali film Chokher Bali (2003), which starred Aishwarya Rai, and in Pradeep Sarkar’s Hindi film Parineeta (2005), where she played the young Lalita, the character played as an adult by Vidya Balan. These early roles gave her years of experience on film sets before her television career began.
In 2008 she played a lead role in the Bengali mythological series Durga, one of her first important roles on TV.
Uttaran: Becoming Ichcha
Tina’s big break came with Colors TV’s Uttaran, which began in 2009. She played Ichcha Bundela, the daughter of a maid, who grows up alongside her mother’s employer’s daughter, Tapasya, and is always given the “uttaran” (hand-me-downs). The story of the friendship and rivalry between the two girls became one of the most popular shows of its time, and Ichcha made Tina a well-known face across India.
Her performance won her the Producers Guild Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series, and she was nominated at the Indian Telly Awards in 2009 and 2010. Even years later, she is still often called “Ichcha” by fans.
Uttaran premiered on 1 December 2008 and ran until 16 January 2015, with 1,549 episodes, produced by Film Farm India. Tina took over as the adult Ichcha after an 18-year leap in June 2009. After a second leap in March 2012, she played Ichcha’s daughter, Meethi, until the show ended in 2015. In the early years Uttaran was one of the top-rated Hindi shows, and it helped Colors TV briefly overtake Star Plus as India’s number one Hindi entertainment channel. The show also won the Indian Telly Award for Best Daily Serial (2010).
Khatron Ke Khiladi and Fantasy Shows
After Uttaran, Tina tried reality TV. In 2016 she took part in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 7, finishing twelfth. She then moved to mythology and fantasy dramas. In Karmaphal Daata Shani (2017–2018) she played Dhamini, and in the supernatural show Daayan (2018–2019) she played Jhanvi Mourya and Kundani Roy.
Naxalbari and Music Videos
In 2020 she made her web debut in the ZEE5 crime thriller Naxalbari, which won her an OTT debut award. In 2021 she made her music video debut in Mika Singh’s Bengali song Durga Maa Elo Re, celebrating Durga Puja, which she said brought back her childhood memories of Kolkata.
