Early Life and Family
Kohli grew up in Uttam Nagar, West Delhi, in a Punjabi family. His father, Prem Kohli, was a criminal lawyer, and his mother, Saroj Kohli, is a homemaker. He has an elder brother, Vikas, and an elder sister, Bhawna.
He joined the West Delhi Cricket Academy in 1998, at age nine, under coach Rajkumar Sharma. He studied at Vishal Bharti Public School and later at Saviour Convent School in Delhi.
His father died in December 2006, while Kohli was playing a Ranji Trophy match for Delhi. He returned to bat the next morning, an innings often cited as a turning point in his career.

Under-19 and Domestic Cricket
Kohli made his first-class debut for Delhi in 2006. In 2008 he captained India to the ICC Under-19 World Cup title in Malaysia, which put him in line for a senior call-up.
International Debut and Rise
