Haripriya Early Life and Education
Haripriya was born Shruthi Chandrasena on 29 October 1991 in Chikkaballapur, a town north of Bengaluru. After finishing school she trained in Bharatanatyam, the classical dance form whose expressive training later helped her on screen. Her family subsequently moved to Bengaluru, where she completed her pre-university course.
Her first film offer came early. While she was still in Class 12, she was offered the lead in the Tulu film Badi, which became her first film. She adopted the screen name Haripriya when she entered the movies and has since used the double-letter spelling “Hariprriya” in many credits. In 2013, her mother asked her to change the spelling again for numerological reasons; Haripriya declined, saying her mother had insisted but that she preferred to keep her name.
Haripriya Film Career
Early Kannada films (2008–2010)
Haripriya’s Kannada debut was Manasugula Mathu Madhura (2008). Her breakthrough came with Kallara Santhe (2009), opposite Yash, which earned her a Best Actress nomination at the 57th Filmfare Awards South as well as nominations at the Suvarna and Udaya film awards. She also played a supporting role in Shiva Rajkumar’s Cheluveye Ninne Nodalu, which brought her Best Supporting Actress nominations at the Suvarna and Udaya awards.
Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam (2010–2013)
In 2010 Haripriya expanded into other industries. She made her Tamil debut in Kanagavel Kaaka and her Telugu debut in Thakita Thakita, opposite Harshvardhan Rane. Her biggest Telugu success came with Pilla Zamindar (2011), a comedy-drama starring Nani that became a word-of-mouth hit. She worked with director Cheran in the Tamil thriller Muran, made her Malayalam debut in Thiruvambadi Thamban, and took on a bold role as a call girl in the Telugu film Abbayi Class Ammayi Mass (2013).
Leading lady of Sandalwood (2014–2019)
Prashanth Neel’s debut film Ugramm (2014), opposite Sriimurali, was a turning point. The stylish gangster drama was a major hit, and she earned a second Filmfare nomination for Best Actress. Years later, Neel went on to direct the KGF films and Salaar, which makes Ugramm an important film in Kannada cinema history.
She followed it with Ranna (2015) with Sudeep, Bullet Basya (2015) with Sharan, Ricky (2016) with Rakshit Shetty, and Ranatantra (2016) with Vijay Raghavendra, and danced a special song in Bhale Jodi. Vijay Prasad’s dark comedy Neer Dose (2016), with Jaggesh, was the most daring choice of this phase and won her Best Actress nominations at Filmfare, SIIMA and the City Cine Awards. In 2017 she starred in Bharjari and made a cameo in Anjaniputra.
In 2018 she returned to Telugu with Jai Simha, opposite Nandamuri Balakrishna, and starred in the Kannada films Kanaka, Samhaara (with Chiranjeevi Sarja) and Life Jothe Ondh Selfie. In 2019, Bell Bottom, a retro detective comedy directed by Jayatheertha with Rishab Shetty, became one of the year’s biggest Kannada hits and earned her Critics Choice and Chandanavana Film Critics nominations. That year also saw Soojidara, D/O Parvathamma, the mythological epic Kurukshetra, Ellide Illi Tanaka with Srujan Lokesh, Kannad Gothilla and the Rishab Shetty-directed anthology Katha Sangama.
