Rani Mukerji was born on 21 March 1978 in Bombay (now Mumbai) into the Mukherji-Samarth film family, one of the oldest families in Indian cinema. Her father, Ram Mukherjee, was a film director and a co-founder of Filmalaya Studios, and her mother, Krishna Mukherjee, was a playback singer. Her elder brother, Raja Mukherjee, is a film producer and director.
