Karisma Kapoor Early Life, Family and Education
Karisma was born in Mumbai to actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita and grew up as part of the Kapoor family, one of the oldest film dynasties in India. She is the granddaughter of Raj Kapoor and the great-granddaughter of Prithviraj Kapoor. Her younger sister is actress Kareena Kapoor Khan.
At the time, the Kapoor family traditionally did not encourage its women to act, which made her decision to join films notable. She studied at Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai and briefly attended Sophia College for Women before leaving to start her film career as a teenager. Her parents separated when she was young, and she and Kareena were raised largely by their mother, who backed both daughters’ careers.
Karisma Kapoor Career
Teenage Debut and Commercial Hits (1991–1995)
Karisma made her debut at 16 opposite Harish Kumar in Prem Qaidi (1991), which was a success. She spent the early 1990s in a string of mass entertainers and found her footing in comedy, especially with David Dhawan and Govinda. The cult comedy Andaz Apna Apna (1994) and Coolie No. 1 (1995) made her one of the most bankable young stars of the decade.
Raja Hindustani and the Critical Turn (1996–1999)
Dharmesh Darshan’s romance Raja Hindustani (1996), opposite Aamir Khan, became one of the biggest hits of the 1990s and won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. A year later, she played the dancer Nisha in Yash Chopra’s Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), which earned her both the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress award. She closed the decade with hits like Judwaa (1997), Biwi No.1 (1999) and the family drama Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999).

Fiza, Zubeidaa and Performance Roles (2000–2003)
In the early 2000s, Karisma chose more serious, performance-driven roles. In Khalid Mohamed’s Fiza (2000), she played a young woman searching for her missing brother, winning her second Filmfare Best Actress award. In Shyam Benegal’s Zubeidaa (2001), she played the title role of a tragic young woman married into royalty, which brought her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. Many critics count these two films among her best work.
Break, Comeback and Streaming (2003–2024)
After her marriage in 2003, she largely stepped away from films, though she starred in the television series Karishma: The Miracles of Destiny. She returned to the big screen with Vikram Bhatt’s 3D thriller Dangerous Ishhq (2012). Later she has appeared as a judge on dance reality shows, starred in the ALTBalaji web series Mentalhood (2020) and played a supporting role in Homi Adajania’s Netflix murder mystery Murder Mubarak (2024).

The couple filed for divorce by mutual consent in 2014, and it was finalised in 2016. She has since raised her children in Mumbai and keeps them largely out of the spotlight.
